Dried nettle for hypothyroidism.

Loading...

Nettle, also known as Urtica Dioica, is a great herb for curing many thyroid problems including both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. It is known that nettle can correct any type of thyroid imbalance. It is very healthy containing Vitamin A, B6, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, and Iodine[1].

To Prepare Nettle Leaf Tea[2]:

  • Add 1 cup of dried nettle herb to 2 cups of boiling water.
  • Let the mixture boil for 2 minutes, strain, and drink the tea.
  • Drink the tea twice to thrice a day.

If you don’t want to drink tea, you can massage your neck region with its oil to overcome hypothyroidism. This will soothe your thyroid gland and helps in its functioning.

To Prepare Nettle Oil Infusion[3]:

  • Crush 1 cup of dried nettle leaves, and place the crushed leaves in a clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Boil 1 quart of water in a pot. Pour the boiled water over the crushed nettle leaves in the jar. Place the lid on the jar tightly.
  • Steep the crushed nettle leaves in the water for at least four hours and up to 10 hours. Keep the jar at room temperature on a shelf or counter until the oil infusion is steeped.
  • Strain the liquid from the crushed leaves. Remove the plant material, and dispose of it, use the nettle oil infusion immediately or store it for up to three days in a refrigerator.

When cutting it out they found cancer. They pretty confident that they got it all out. Because I was a kidney failure pt on Dialysis they put some of those pharatyroids in my left for arm so I could make some of my own calcium. I totally agree with you. • Annie says:September 4, 2017 at 12:30 amI’m a certified herbalist and i’ve never seen nettle used specifically for thyroid issues. While its great nutritive plant and can bring forth many health amelioration, i feel it’s a lie to pretend it would singlehandedly cure thyroid issues. Please dont spread info on plants unless you know the topic. There are plenty of herbalists to consult to acertain your articles. Also if you have proof of this i would love to read a case study or some scientific evidence on the topic.REPLY
    • Desiree says:September 4, 2017 at 4:53 amAmen to that! It so scary that people just throw out this type of information with nothing that has been peer reviewed, an experiment to prove a hypothesis correctly making it theory, or anything else for that matter. This is serious business when you talking about cures for illnesses dealing with the thyroid. Thank you for saying that.REPLY
    • Anna says:September 4, 2017 at 5:20 pmI understand you are an herbalist and from what you are saying you know something about this plant. If that’s is the case what have you seen it used for? • Lillian says:February 5, 2018 at 2:09 pmI am in total agreement with you on this. My husband suffers from hypothyroidism and one thing we have been using that has been helping him is pineapples. We will also be trying nettle leaf tea and oil.REPLY

      • Sherry V says:April 4, 2018 at 12:46 pmAlise, I have been struggling with hypothyroid for about 18 years, taking different versions and doses of “Synthroid”. I read something on Pinterest about Nettle Leaf being effective as a treatment, and asked the owner of “Simply Natural” (a vitamin and nutrition store I’ve gone to for years) about it, and he confirmed its efficacy. I started taking it about 10 days before I had some bloodwork done, and my thyroid levels had improved! My doctor lowered my dose of levothyroxine from 137 to 125 mcg! However, when I told him (through the nurse that called to tell me about the scrip) that I was using Nettle, and that’s the reason it’s improved, he said I shouldn’t take it….? I will have to see him to ask why he feels that way, but for now, I’m still taking it REPLY
        • Sherry V says:April 4, 2018 at 12:49 pmPS – I’ve also begun losing weight at about 1-2 lbs a week without consciously changing anything.REPLY
        • Latasha says:April 14, 2018 at 12:02 pmWestern Medical society is all about the green dollar, and don’t want You to know of natural cures. Look, he himself witnessed you getting better to the point he even decreased your script, but the moment you tell him it was due to a natural substance he immediately responds “stop taking it!” Hmmm, does that make ANY sense? We all have to wake up to our horrific, money hungry medical & industry and big pharma. They’re in it together:(REPLY
          • Corina says:July 26, 2018 at 4:31 pmI surely agree with that, my fatigue is so bad I have laid down to nap right after work and I have a desk job, this is horrible. I also suffer from an autoimmune disease, which makes it worse. Pharmaceuticals are so rich there killing us Americans with their medications.

        • Margie says:August 22, 2018 at 7:49 amWhen you started taking the nettle, were you still taking the prescription meds?REPLY
      • Melissa says:April 24, 2018 at 12:36 pmAsk your dr about Armour thyroid medication. It is a bio identical. Naturally closer to what our own body would produce. Less “risk” & I also showed more improvement when I switched & added a T-3.
JMO but it works better for me however I would love to find something even more natural that would really work and keep me healthy & hormones balancedREPLY
      • Kim says:May 14, 2018 at 3:51 amAsk your doctor to put you on a natural thyroid medication (I take Nature Throid). I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 27 years ago and took synthetic meds for years. Then I started noticing symptoms returning and my throat felt like it was closing up, so I went to an endocrinologist who said I should try a natural medication instead of the synthetic. They’re made from dried pig thyroid glands which contain Thyroxine (T4), T3, T2, T1 and Calcitonin. It has made a world of difference!REPLY
        • Carol Garrett says:July 16, 2018 at 4:41 pmWhat dosage are you taking? My doctor started me on NP thyroid which seemed to help after a few weeks but now I’m getting worse again.REPLY
          • Heather says:July 19, 2018 at 5:28 pmNP Thyroid has reformulated which is the reason that those of us who take it now all feel like garbage. FDA continues to mess with our natural healing approaches. Look into a product called ThyroGold from New Zealand. It’s a little more expensive than NP and your insurance won’t cover it because it’s considered a supplement, though it does have desiccated bovine thyroid in it from pasture raised cows not treated with hormones. Many people have had good luck with this product.
      • pamela says:July 19, 2018 at 4:56 pmI am also hypothyroid.I took synthyroid for 7 years with no change.I am one to try herbs over medicine.I quit taking the med the doctor subscribed and feel the same as before.I tried cbd oil and for me it helps me sleep and helps with the inflammation in my shoulder.I do not tell people to try things I recommend someone in the herbal field who knows for sure for the side effects of herbs can be bad if not taken correctly.REPLY
        • Jolene mowrey says:August 4, 2018 at 4:15 amI’m a combat vet and suffer from ptsd thyroiditis and the VA is trying to put me on meds for my thyroid now and say it’ll be for the rest of my life! Kinda scary! I’ve been doing my research and I came across a book on amazon called medical medium thyroid healing and was able to download it for free in audible! It’s crazy how it talks about mononucleosis and Epstein Barr virus and how it’s connected to thyroid issues! I’ve had mono as a teenager and wonder if this is true?REPLY
          • Mischa says:December 30, 2018 at 12:16 amYou realize that the Medical Medium is a total quack who has zero medical training, right? He used to be in my brother’s band years ago.
      • Z says:September 10, 2018 at 10:36 pmI was sentenced to life on synthroid. get off ASAP (this is *DANGEROUS* if not done slowly and properly) and do Gerson Therapy- yes it is intended for cancer because it detoxifies the body and rids your entire system of excess salt on a cellular level.
Salt is the thyroid killer for the predisposed (yes I’m a medical professional).REPLY

    • Caroline McBride says:March 24, 2018 at 4:47 pmI have thyroid problem and it no joke. Trying to lose weight & join hurt. Is not fun. This is a serious problem. Please stop the lies. REPLY
      • Sherry V says:April 4, 2018 at 12:56 pmCaroline, why do you think the post is lies? What have you tried and how long have you been trying? It took me 18 years to get fed up with “adjusting the dose and changing the type of prescription” every 6 months to a year, and all the while adding about 30-40 lbs over the years…..
Don’t knock the natural remedies before you try it. The reasoning behind Nettle working is that Hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disease which is an inflammation issue….Nettle reduces inflammation (which is why it’s good for arthritis and allergies too).REPLY
        • Camille says:April 13, 2018 at 3:33 pmWhat form of the Nettle Leaf did you use? The tea or the oil or both? If it was tea what brand and where did you purchase it at?REPLY

I also suffer with Ibs and have severe swelling and bloating.. I’ve gained 10kg through eating healthy and moderate workout.. I’m trying to understand this and see what else I could do to help assist my meds and to make me less sluggish and tired.REPLY
  • Megan says:September 5, 2017 at 6:16 amWhile it is nice to see more people looking to herbs I have to agree with Annie. As an herbalist as well I have never seen it used as a “permanent cure” for thyroid. There are cases where nettles are used to treat allergies causing rhinitis, asthma, earaches, and even chronic conditions such as bronchitis and emphysema (According to UMN). Or with Women’s Health PCOS, Menopause, HRT Support, and Osteoporosis (According to Fredonia) because they are a nutritive. As for the second recipe you listed, that would be an infusion not an oil. An infusion is a large amount of herb brewed for a long time. Typically, one ounce by weight (about a cup by volume) of dried herb is placed in a quart jar which is then filled to the top with boiling water, tightly lidded and allowed to steep for 4-10 hours.REPLY
  • Bev says:September 6, 2017 at 10:16 amI have never heard it used for thyroid, but have for kidneys & bladder. You need to be careful with this herb though. Always read up on something before just trying, especially herbal remedies. Even homepathic can be dangerous if not used correctly.REPLY
